Toshiba And STCR Add Checkout Convenience For Key Food Montague

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions, Inc. (Toshiba) and business partner STCR, Inc., recently added new innovative cashless self checkout systems for Key Food Montague, a well-known cooperative grocer in Brooklyn Heights, New York. Installed and operational in just one week, the Toshiba Self Checkout System 6 units provide an easy and intuitive experience for shoppers, satisfying Key Food Montague customers with a fast and independent checkout experience, while maximizing store operational efficiencies.

Being a local neighborhood favorite, Key Food Montague takes great pride in being a metro store where you can stop by for a few groceries at lunch, on your way home, or shop for an entire week. The store offers a wide assortment of quality products including traditional, organic and natural foods, produce, fresh meat, deli and bakery items. In looking to the future, Key Food Montague sought to stay competitive by incorporating cashless self checkout systems, especially given the popularity of self service across their growing base of millennial customers.

“As owners of Key Food Montague, staying on top of the latest trends in grocery and being agile and competitive with other stores led us to add the convenience of self checkout. We gained a quick uptick in customer count, particularly the younger millennial generation,” said Ivan Arguello and Enrico Palazio, Key Food Montague. “STCR and Toshiba were instrumental in guiding us through the entire process – from selecting cashless systems that ensure a speedy transaction, all the way to the site selection.”

According to Key Food Montague, the key to the success of the self checkout machines was having them installed in the center of the store where foot traffic is most prominent. Although some customers were hesitant about new technology at first, the neighborhood has responded well to the added convenience, with four self checkout lanes managing over 20% of the customer count.

Self checkout, irrespective of basket size, not only offers an improved shopper experience, but saves on store labor productivity and resource utilization, which can cost 20 – 30% of the payroll in retail. Once implemented, retailers today can realize a return on their investment costs in less than 18 months, which is very appealing.

“An increasing number of today’s consumers are looking for self checkout, so it’s becoming an expectation for stores,” said Brian Tuberman, President, STCR, Inc. “We placed 4 lanes in a condensed front end at Key Food Montague, providing express lanes with the labor costs of one attendant and minimizing operating costs by reducing reconciliation to weekly versus daily.”

“Toshiba offers retailers a broad selection of self service choices, ranging from consumer mobile shopping and associate mobile line busting to the award-winning System 6 platform,” said Bill Campbell, Vice President, Head of Sales, North and Latin America, Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions. “We are pleased that Key Food Montague selected Toshiba System 6 integrated with STCR’s POS application to easily extend throughput at the front-end, offering high availability checkout for its shoppers.”

Toshiba is the global leader in Brilliant CommerceTM and has been publicly recognized for its product innovation strategy for System 6 – an advanced platform that contributes to a dynamic shopper experience in addition to providing a low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for the retailer.
