Grocery stores are in a bare-knuckle battle for customers, and supermarkets in Western New York are swinging away. With shrewd customers, thin margins and increasing pressure from new rivals, grocers here must constantly innovate just to hold on to their share of the market.

The latest example is a new pricing strategy Tops Markets will unveil Sunday.

The Williamsville-based grocer will implement a “Price Lock Guarantee,” freezing prices on a list of more than 300 staple items it says customers buy most.
