An Asian supermarket chain with a dominant presence on the West Coast has chosen Hackensack as one of its first locations on the East Coast.
California-based Tawa Supermarkets Inc. plans to open three of its 99 Ranch Market grocery stores in New Jersey by the end of this year, including a 59,170-square-foot store in a former Pathmark in the Hackensack Plaza shopping center at 450 Hackensack Ave. That space has been vacant since April 2011, when A&P closed a number of stores as part of a reorganization triggered by its first bankruptcy the previous year, and wasn't part of the current A&P bankruptcy and liquidation.
The 99 Ranch Market group, with 39 stores in California, Washington, Nevada and Texas, specializes in imported foods from Taiwan and China, along with Filipino, Hispanic and Indian specialties. Its stores feature live lobster, crab and fish that can be cleaned, cut and cooked on-site. The stores also have hot deli departments with prepared Asian foods, including dim sum and barbecue stations.
