Plans to knock down and rebuild Millbrae's Safeway grocery store have been approved, but the project won't start until at least January 2012.
Safeway will wait until the rebuilding of the store in Burlingame is finished and the holiday season has passed before breaking ground on the project to replace the Millbrae store at 525 El Camino Real, said Planning Commission Chairwoman Catherine Quigg.
Safeway officials unveiled the timeline Tuesday night before the commission voted 4-0 to approve the store's design. Commissioner Lorrie Kalos-Gunn was absent from the meeting.
The approval is final unless appealed, though Safeway must still work out some final questions over the signs that will be displayed on the building.
