Morgan Hill – At PMA Foodservice this year, Sakata Seed America is promoting two of their top star performers: Touchstone Gold golden beet and Infinite Gold long-shelf-life cantaloupe!
Sakata Seed America recently released the results of sensory testing for their first golden beet, Touchstone Gold. Touchstone Gold touts vibrant, sunset yellow internal color and a mild, sweet flavor. When stacked against top golden beets in the market today, Touchstone Gold reigned superior in flavor and color retention in both raw and pressure-cooked testing.
“This is incredible news for value-added beet products. There is a need in the market for a golden beet that can be pre-cooked and packaged without losing their bright color and appeal. With Touchstone Gold, consumers no longer have to choose between convenience, color and flavor. Now, you can have all three!” states Delita Pardue, Sakata’s Beet Product Manager.
According to the study performed by third-party research company, SCS Global Services, Touchstone Gold ranked highest in overall appearance, aroma, texture and quality in both raw and pressure cooked sensory testing. In addition, in pressure cooked testing, Touchstone Gold ranked highest in overall flavor balance. In raw testing, Touchstone Gold was also ranked highest for the physical characteristics of external color and uniformity, firmness and juiciness. You can see the full results here.
These findings are not unlike those previously performed with Infinite Gold cantaloupe and top melon competitors. In 2012 and 2013 studies, Infinite Gold cantaloupe ranked consecutively highest due to its overall quality profile for most attributes, specifically for flavor, texture, and aroma. Infinite Gold was also rated highest for its physical characteristics such as rind color, flesh color, and external color balance. See the full results here.
And it’s not just Sakata products going for the gold at this year’s show, Sakata’s Customer Service Manager, Allen Satterlee, is riding in the 2016 Tour de Fresh, and fundraising to bring a salad bar to Joint Union Elementary School in Galt, California through the Bring Salad Bars to Schools program. Show your support for Allen here!
Be sure to catch up with Sakata this weekend at PMA Foodservice in Monterey, California at Booth#251, or, for retailers, register for Sakata’s first annual Retail Day at California Field Days in Woodland, California on August 12th, 2016. Please email Jiana Escobar, jescobar@sakata.com, to RSVP.
