Safeway employees began posting signs in stores late Tuesday trumpeting a new program that allows shoppers to sort manufacturers' coupons and weekly sales online, add items they need and print or e-mail themselves the grocery list.

Called "Just for U," the program has been tested at a few of the grocer's subsidiaries and was quietly launched in the Portland area this week. Safeway, which is based in Pleasanton, Calif., promises to links coupons to shoppers' loyalty cards and track usual purchases for future grocery lists.

Using that historical information, the program also offers personalized discounts that shoppers can use in tandem with manufacturers' coupons. The program is available online or through smartphones.
