Safeway Closing Nine Stores In Metro Denver

Safeway is closing nine locations across metro Denver, citing non-profitability as the main reason for the decision, according to a corporate letter obtained by the DBJ.
Kristine J. Staaf, director of public affairs/government relations for Safeway's Denver division, confirmed the closures, saying the company has spent more than a year evaluating ways to help the stores improve their performance.
"This was a very difficult decision made after long and careful deliberation," Staaf said. "Ultimately, our business analysis indicated that we needed to cease operations at these locations."
