With concierge service, a profusion of organic produce and a broad selection of competitively priced wine and beer, Plum Market expects to plant its flag in the notoriously cut-throat Chicago grocery market.
The 27,000 square-foot location at 1233 N. Wells St. is scheduled to open Wednesday, with high-end offerings including an Intelligentsia cafe, wine bar, frozen yogurt stand and sushi made by Michelin-rated chef Takashi Yagahashi.
This is the fourth location for the Farmington Hills, Mich.-based chain, and the first outside of Southeast Michigan.
It seems a tricky time to make the move. Competition on the premium and value-priced ends of the grocery spectrum has heated up as Jewel and Dominick's, which once controlled the Chicago market, have struggled. New players such as Mariano's Fresh Market, Fresh Market and Sunset Foods have been expanding as long with low-priced chains like Walmart and Aldi.
