The beef checkoff, through the Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative (NEBPI) and in partnership with the Pennsylvania Beef Council exhibited at the 14th Annual Pennsylvania Coalition of Nurse Practitioners conference, “Healthcare 2016: Surviving the Stampede,” in Pocono Manor, PA Thursday, November 3 through Saturday, November 5.
The coalition’s annual meeting drew nearly 520 nurse practitioners from across Pennsylvania, to the Pocono Mountains area for a three-day, engaging and educational event. The conference enabled the checkoff to engage directly with this influential group of health care professionals sharing the positive benefits of lean beef in the diet of their patients. Attendees thoroughly enjoyed leaning about the Protein Challenge and the importance of spreading their protein intake throughout the day. Many were pleased to see beef represented at their meeting, as nutrition is a large component of healthy living.
Jennifer Orr, Director of Public Relations for NEBPI, saw the need to educate Nurse Practitioner’s on the importance of lean beef in the diet, commenting, “Many influencers are still citing old science when their patients ask about consuming lean beef. Those who engaged with the checkoff’s booth were excited to hear about the benefits of lean beef and how people can get more ‘bang for their buck’ when choosing nutrient dense foods, such as beef”.
The PA Coalition of Nurse Practitioners currently works on behalf of 7,500 Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners and 1,350 members in Pennsylvania. This group of health professionals have received clinical training and advance education in specialty areas of health care. They work closely with their patients to help them make informed lifestyle choices and health care decisions, based on information taken from this most recent continuing education program.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States may retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
