Several health and natural food grocery chains are putting on weight fast, gobbling up market share from local and regional players.
The upper-crust grocery markets helped keep the retail-super/mini-market industry group in a steady, top-50 post in IBD's industry rankings through the second quarter. The group is led by The Fresh Market (TFM) and Whole Foods Market (WFM).
A new entrant to the group, Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage (NGVC), came public July 25.
Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods has more than 300 stores spread across 38 states. California is its stronghold, with 65 stores at the start of the year.
