It's official: Lidl has selected Alamance County for a regional headquarters and distribution hub as it works toward expansion into the U.S. The German discount grocer is expected to invest $125 million and create 200 jobs during the next three years.
The announcement Wednesday by N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory, N.C. Commerce Secretary John Skvarla and the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina comes on the heels of news that Lidl had chosen Arlington County, Va., over Charlotte for its U.S. headquarters. The grocer will spend more than $200 million there.
The Triad Business Journal first reported in early April that the discount grocer, which operates nearly 10,000 stores globally and is a direct rival to fast-growing Aldi, was considering building an 850,000-square-foot facility on an 85-acre site in the N.C. Commerce Park, near the junction of Interstate 85 and Interstate 40.
