There was a time when pulling out store brand apple sauce could  bring snickers and a little teasing at some school lunch tables, but now there's a store brand that just might be a status symbol.

Kings Food Markets yesterday introduced its private label brand of 350 products, emphasizing that each item bearing the Kings name meets the quality standards the upscale store chain's customers have come to expect.

"We have been working on this for over a year," said Judy Spires, Kings president and chief executive officer. The goal is to have at least 700 private label products that can be offered from Kings stores over the next few years, with new items rolled out gradually, she said. "We are striving to deliver the Kings quality standard in each product."
