Topeka, Kansas – The average Kansan spends about eighty bucks a week on groceries. Now lawmakers are considering dropping the taxes.
“The main thing here is the tax relief,” says Republican House member Jana Goodman of Leavenworth. “Tax relief plus we’re hoping it will stimulate our economy a little bit.”
Goodman says the average taxpayer needs a break, and tax-free groceries would do just that. It would cost the state about $350 Million a year. Lawmakers say they hope retail sales would pick up and make up the difference.
Economist Jeremy Hill at Wichita State University says a tax break on groceries would be huge for some.
