The Federal Trade Commission voted 4-0 Monday to accept a settlement package from Albertson’s that includes divestiture of its Amarillo and Wichita Falls stores, made necessary by its proposed $385 million acquisition of the United Family.
“Most of it was between Albertson’s and the Federal Trade Commission. They were the ones heavily involved,” said Robert Taylor, president of the United Family. “We were kind of on the outside looking in on this deal. I’m just glad it’s done. It wasn’t really disruptive to us, but it is nice to have that step behind us.”
Albertson’s agreed to sell the stores to resolve FTC charges that the United acquisition would unlawfully reduce competition in those particular markets. The FTC agreement also includes other conditions upon Albertson’s intended purchase of Lubbock-based United, which operates 51 stores under United Supermarkets, Market Street and Amigos banners.
