HARRISON – Grocery chain Wegmans is pitching a proposed megastore off Westchester Avenue as an economic boon that will revitalize the flagging "Platinum Mile," according to the development application filed with the town.
The family-owned supermarket chain announced Thursday that it signed a purchase agreement with Normandy Real Estate Partners for a more than 20-acre parcel at 106-110 Corporate Park Drive, off Interstate 287. The site is currently an office complex consisting of three aging, partially vacant buildings that would be demolished before construction begins.
The 100-year-old company plans a standalone 125,000-square-foot grocery store in the rear of the lot and an 8,000-square-foot separate standalone retail store toward the front that would be suitable for a restaurant or similar tenant, Wegmans Director of Real Estate and Site Development Dan Aiken said at Thursday's Harrison Town Board meeting. He said the total cost for the project would be at least $30 million.
Aiken said the company would hire between 400-500 employees for the new location.
