REHOBOTH BEACH – Getting oysters this time of year is normally a little tight, but lingering cold temperatures in the Northeast combined with shortages in the Gulf region have caused some suppliers to clam up.
At Henlopen City Oyster House in Rehoboth Beach, owner Chris Bisaha runs nine different varieties of oysters every day. It’s often difficult to get oysters in early spring, when public oyster grounds shut down and farmers look for wild oysters in private grounds. But the chilly temperatures this year have stunted overall growth.
“It happens every year around this time,” he said. “This year it’s a little tighter than normal, but you can still get them. It’s just less of a choice.”
