Customers at The Turnip Truck natural food market may have noticed more braises and pot roasts on the hot bar in place of pricier cuts of meat.

At Nashville-based Mrs. Grissom's Salads, the manufacturer offset a 10 percent spike in the cost of oils used in its prepared sandwich spreads by getting better deals on ham and chicken ingredients.

Meanwhile, retiree Myra Harding of North Nashville clips coupons, fills her cart when she finds Kroger Plus Card sales and turns to store brands to save money on other items, including juice.

"I can taste the difference, but it's what I can afford," said Harding, 65, who has a $300 monthly grocery budget.
