Big Save Value Centers, a Kauai grocery store chain, is being sold to QSI Inc., doing business as Times Supermarket, for an undisclosed amount. The sale is expected to close this summer.
Big Save Value Centers was founded by the Kawakami family and was incorporated as Big Save Inc. in 1958. Big Save Inc. is scheduled to be terminated as a corporation this year, and the Kawakami family decided to sell the business when shareholders could not agree on new ownership, according to a statement from Big Save Value Centers.
As part of the sale agreement, the Big Save locations in Eleele, Hanalei, Kapaa, Koloa and Waimea will continue operating; the Lihue store will close due to a Times Supermarket already being located in the area. Most of the 234 managers and employees are expected to transition to similar jobs under the new management, but all staff must apply for jobs under the new ownership, according to the statement.
