GETTYSBURG, Pa. — The Battle of Gettysburg was a pivotal point in America's Civil War. It signaled the start of the tide of the war to turn in the Union's favor and led to some of this country's most significant events, such as President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and the reunification of the then-28 states into the Union.
July 1, 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, and will be observed by way of a well-orchestrated Salute to the States commemorative event. Festivities for the Gettysburg Foundation's event will occur in the park's museum and visitor center. The event begins at 7 p.m. and will feature special stage performances, period dance, living history performances, a "Culinary Tour of America" and a special exhibit from the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum Collection.
As the exclusive provider of food and beverages at the Gettysburg National Military Park Visitor Center, ARAMARK Parks and Destinations will cater the entire event and add its own touch of patriotism to Salute to the States by presenting the "Culinary Tour of America".
"The menu for the evening's event is as diverse as the nation's people, geography and tastes," said Brian Stapleton, vice president of food and beverage for ARAMARK Parks and Destinations. "The fare will be based on dishes from the Civil War period, yet will add a contemporary twist. This is a patriotic event that commemorates the reunification of the country, so we will have food that reflects that theme."
Selections to be featured at the event include pan seared red snapper and red rum cake (South region), Sam Adams cod and blueberry cobbler (North region), shrimp and grits (Southeast region), pulled pork tacos and prickly pear brulee (West region) and poached salmon risotto and apple crisp to represent the local region. With an effort to 'Sustain the Future to Preserve the Past' at the event, ARAMARK will serve all dishes on eco-friendly bamboo ware.
