Dallas, TX – Representatives of the Produce for Pink campaign announce today that $6,000 was raised during the recent Fresh Summit exposition held in Atlanta, Georgia, October 14 – 17, 2011. During a press conference held on Monday, October 17, 2011, a check was presented to Atlanta-based Saint Joseph’s Mercy Foundation on behalf of the fresh produce industry.
Melissa McDill, President of McDill Associates, and Dan’l Mackey Almy, President of DMA Solutions, presented the check to Eileen Ruban, Saint Joseph’s employee, Doug Spickler and Alice Kerber, founders of the Traci Spickler Fund; a fund used to help families of cancer patients in Atlanta with treatment costs, transportation and living expenses.
“From start to finish, the Produce for Pink effort has been an experience that I will never forget,” said Melissa McDill. “I would personally like to thank each individual, from exhibitor to attendee that made a contribution to this cause that in some way touches us all. What started as a vision brought to us by Cindy Jewell (Director of Marketing, California Giant Berry Farms) will surely grow in impact each year with the support of our industry.”
With over 17,000 attendees each year, Fresh Summit was the natural launch pad to introduce this initiative to industry members. The goal was to invite each attendee to donate just one dollar at donation stations located throughout the show floor. Short of the final goal, the Produce for Pink team strongly encourages additional donations to be made on behalf of the campaign to the Saint Joseph’s Mercy Foundation.
“This was our first attempt to create a campaign that united the industry in the fight against breast cancer and we are very pleased with the result,” said Dan’l Mackey Almy. “While we were unable to reach all 17,000 attendees with our message, the result was a success. The simple fact that we raised money together to help someone in need is enough reason to continue Produce for Pink in other cities around the country.”
