McAllen, TX – The Texas Watermelon Association (TWA) launched its “Grab a Slice of Texas” campaign with a high-impact billboard in Times Square, NYC. The campaign is supported by a new consumer-facing website (grabasliceoftx.com) and digital ads that encourage people outside the state to explore Texas watermelons in a unique and engaging way. Additionally, street teams will be handing out slices of watermelon in key neighborhoods throughout NYC.
“We Texans have known how sweet our watermelons are,” said Ward Thomas, Treasurer of the TWA. “This year, we wanted to share it with the rest of the country.”
But the benefits of the campaign reach beyond raising awareness.
As one of the top four watermelon producers in the country, growing 15% of the total domestic crop, Texas produce is vital to the U.S. economy. TWA’s marketing campaigns have boosted the Texas economy through sales of local watermelon within the Texas region.
“Texas watermelons contribute almost $50 million annually to our state’s economy,” explained Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples. “Grown on farms stretching from the Rio Grande Valley up to the High Plains and from East Texas to the Trans-Pecos, watermelons nourish Texans and the Texas economy—enabling our producers and state to continue to be recognized leaders in the global marketplace.”
The campaign, which highlights the sweetness and nutritional value of Texas-grown watermelons, continues to gain momentum and will conclude on July 4.
