Calverton, NY — Satur Farms announces the opening of their newly expanded 40,000 sq ft cold processing facility for baby leaf salads and leafy greens. Theirs is the sole state-of-the-art, HACCP certified and third-party audited facility of its kind on Long Island. Satur Farms, in operation for 17 years, grows the greens on Long Island that supplies the facility, and grows extensively in Florida in winter. Their Florida program not only provides the new facility with a continuous supply of product, but it also helps to employ the majority or its farm workers year-round, resulting in a sustainable operation.
The plant layout and design is by Felix Werner Architecture, Berlin, Germany. Build-out was executed solely by Long Island companies: Hallam Engineering and Refrigeration, Westbury; EECO Electric, Southold; KJB Enterprises, Riverhead for the concrete work, and Albrecht Earthworks, Mattituck installed the drainage system.
The expansion was funded in part by the Long Island Development Council, Empire State Development Corporation, LEAF Financial, Whole Foods Market Local Producer Loan Program, and the Commodity Credit Corporation arm of the USDA. Satur Farms acknowledges in particular Whole Foods; their financial support of this plant expansion and local farming operations is invaluable. It is also notable that New York State along with the Long Island Development Council recognizes the importance of agriculture on the island, not only as an historical reference, but as a vigorous economic engine, generating well-paying jobs that drives the region and preserves the rural character of the North Fork of Long Island.
