San Francisco Wholesale Produce Market Launches Local Asparagus Initiative

San Francisco, CA — California asparagus grown within about 150 miles of San Francisco, some as close as Brentwood (55 miles), began arriving this week at the San Francisco Wholesale Produce Market and is expected to continue through mid-May. When it comes to asparagus, many of the Market’s merchants have long-standing relationships with ranchers; some have been buying and selling the ‘grass’ for over 100 years. Merchants report that they pull from more than 15 ranches during the local season.

The Market serves as a hub for produce distribution in the Bay Area – from local to global and organic to conventional. According to Michael Janis, the Market’s general manager, “The Market has developed and is rolling out an initiative that supports our retail customers. We’ve designed and produced a POS rack card and poster to draw consumer attention to Bay Area’s local asparagus season.”
