A representative from Russ Davis Wholesale — a Midwestern distributor of wholesale fresh fruit, vegetables and fresh-cut produce — is expected to update Village of Hammond officials Monday, Jan. 11, on the firm's plans for the former Hammond Cold Storage complex it purchased about a month ago.
A building permit to move ahead with $1.7 million in remodeling of areas formerly holding freezer and warehouse racking was issued in December by Brian Wert, who provides building inspection services for the village.
Wert said Monday the alterations won't change the former storage facility’s footprint but will significantly modify how the building is used. Along with removing freezing equipment and extensive warehouse racking, a large area is being remodeled for ripening bananas and another will contain temperature controls and floor drains for optimal storage of root crops like onions. The overhaul began in December.
