Trade talks between the United States and China may someday result in U.S. pears getting into China and Chinese cherries coming to the U.S.
In the late 1990s, China gained access to the U.S. for its Ya and Fragrant pears.
"We didn't get access going that way, and it was a major sore point for us," said Mark Powers, vice president of the Northwest Horticultural Council in Yakima.
The U.S. has been trying to gain pear access to China since the mid-1990s, but China has been afraid of getting U.S. fire blight.
