TRENTON – New Jersey Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Alfred Murray visited BJ’s Wholesale Club in Manahawkin on Friday, August 20, as the club offered loose Jersey Fresh produce for the first time.
On Friday and Saturday, August 20 and 21, shoppers are being treated to a farmers’ market-like spread of produce from local New Jersey farmers. Club customers are able to purchase and fill a Jersey Fresh box for $3.99.
BJ’s Wholesale Club has 189 locations in 15 states, first opening its doors in 1984. BJ’s provides members with name-brand, quality merchandise, including produce and other groceries. The Jersey Fresh event grew out of the company’s desire to offer locally-grown produce to its members.
Eating Jersey Fresh fruits, vegetables and other agricultural products can go a long way to improving overall health. Eating locally also is a good choice for protecting our environment by reducing the miles a meal travels between farm and fork, lessening fuel consumption. In addition, choosing locally grown products helps keep New Jersey farmers on their land, preserving the Garden State’s quality of life.
