Nogales  – Malena Produce, Inc. has launched a new web site all about Spring Grapes. The idea to offer this service came from retail customers who desire a “seamless” experience from the long winter fruit season to the lightening-quick spring grape window May and June. The site – http://malenaspringgrapes.org – is designed as a retail planning tool, and features posts by Malena’s grape category manager reviewing up-to-date crop conditions, along with tips for handling and merchandising to maximize sales.

Expecting an earlier and lighter overall grape crop, the category team completed a tour of their vineyards last week that revealed the following conditions :

  • PERLETTES: Light to normal volume starting April 28-30
  • FLAMES: Very good berry size, with ideal conditions for this variety. Estimated harvesting May 6th
  • SUGRAONES: Inconsistent bloom, suggesting a lighter crop starting May 18-20
  • BLUES & BLACKS: On schedule to date, more TBA.

Malena Produce, Inc. was founded by Greek immigrants (J. Stamos) to Mexico in the 1950s. Its proprietary Mediterranean-style eggplant production process led to the premium fruit the company is most known for: Malena Brand eggplant. As the largest supplier of eggplant to North America today, Malena Produce continues its expansion as a third-generation, family-run agribusiness, with operations throughout Northwestern Mexico and Arizona. In addition to eggplant and peppers, Malena currently handles squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, pickles and chilis. During spring, they supply grapes and melons.
