As the 2011 strawberry harvest gets underway this month in Watsonville and Salinas, the new Maxco facility in Castroville, Ca is strategically located between two major growing districts to service those growers harvesting and cooling in the region. This new facility complements the facility currently located in South Salinas and addresses the need for additional make-up and distribution in the region. These two Monterey County locations round out Maxco’s full scale operations in Santa Maria, Oxnard and Fullerton to support berries and other coastal produce industry customers.
The location for Maxco’s new 12,000 square foot facility was chosen specifically to address the needs of their grower customers that have shifted their acreage and cooling to the north Salinas and Castroville regions. Maxco is providing all make-up and distribution services for their current customers and are very pleased with the opportunities ahead that will allow them to expand at this location. “This is a great location for our customers and very accessible with plenty of inside storage. We are really excited about the new space and looking forward to the 2011 season here”, says Steve Jewell, Coastal Region Manager for Maxco Supply. A facility manager has been hired for the operation in Castroville and during peak season will employ over 30 seasonal employees.
In addition to recognized innovation at Maxco for the grape and tree fruit industry, the company has led the way in sustainable packaging innovations for strawberries. In response to industry feedback, Maxco has developed a full line of recyclable, non-wax strawberry containers and assembly equipment to meet the demands of today’s marketplace. Their corrugated designs accommodate all clamshell formats in 5 down, 6 down or 8 down configurations, featuring a unique venting system which allows greater cooling efficiencies and longer shelf life for any clamshell configuration. Maxco’s double wall construction improves top to bottom strength and reduces bottom sag for better store arrivals.
