EAST GRAND FORKS, MN – The National Potato Council awarded its Meritorious Service Award to Marty Glynn from Grand Forks at its Annual Meeting last week in Florida. Marty has worked in the potato industry for over 38 years; beginning his career in 1971 as a research technician for the Horticulture Department at North Dakota State University (NDSU), stationed at the USDA, ARS Potato Research Laboratory in East Grand Forks. Marty retired from NSDU in 1998 to accept a position with the USDA-ARS as Worksite Coordinator/Food Technologist at the same location in East Grand Forks.
Northern Plains Potato Growers Association President Chuck Gunnerson says, Marty is a tremendous asset of the potato industry here in North Dakota and Minnesota as well as the rest of the United States. His leadership at the USDA/ARS Potato Research Worksite has helped solve numerous problems faced by growers on a daily basis. Marty may have a soft spoken manner but when it comes to solving potato concerns he is unrelenting in his approach and amount of time dedicated to finding the answers. We are very fortunate to have someone of his caliber located here within a few minutes drive of our potato fields.
Nick David, Extension Agronomist for North Dakota State University and the University of Minnesota noted, Year in and year out Marty Glynn cooperates with potato professionals across the United States developing sugar profiles for advanced breeding clones destined for the chip and/or fry markets. During 2009/10, Marty and I will collaborate on over 10 research trials with the goal of providing research-based information to the potato industry. Marty is a valuable asset to the potato industry and more importantly a friend to numerous researchers and extension personnel in the potato community.
Duane Preston, Retired Extension Potato Specialist for the University of Minnesota and North Dakota State University has worked with Marty on many research projects says, Marty is the silent worker that offers endless energy to help and provide service to anyone in the potato industry from the home gardener to large potato corporations.
