Miami, Florida –Tiffany Comprés and Robert J. McCaffery announced August 1st the launch of their law firm, Comprés + McCaffery, P.A. Comprés, formerly of the renowned firm Proskauer in New York City, and McCaffery, an award winning litigator, are eager to return to their origins in the fresh produce industry.
The duo brings to the community their knowledge of the fresh produce industry from the perspective of the grower, distributer, and broker. Comprés worked with her family at Customized Brokers now Advance Customs Brokers) for years, as well as with J.R. Comprés & Asociados growers of fresh produce in the Dominican Republic), while McCaffery’s family farmed tomatoes and tobacco in Connecticut.
“We are truly excited to return to the industry we have known all our lives,” Comprés stated. “So many friends and family members in the industry would come to us for guidance on industryEspecific legal issues, we felt there was a real need for a fresh look at how lawyers can serve this industry’s particular needs.”
Comprés + McCaffery, P.A. is a boutique law firm that focuses on the fresh produce industry, including PACA law, drafting grower and marketing agreements, and criminal defense, such as food safety violations and drug trafficking. The firm also offers outside inEhouse counsel services, handling general matters that affect the fresh produce industry, such as copyright, trademark, and real estate.
“We find that our experience from inside the industry really informs how we handle these matters as lawyers,” said Comprés. The need for knowledge and guidance is evident, McCaffery stated, but “we often encounter clients who would have had an excellent case if they had obtained a properly drafted contract at the start of the deal. But they didn’t see a lawyer because they were wary of escalating fees.” To address these barriers, C+M prefers to bill at flat rates and focuses on educating clients so they can avoid future litigation.
“We are problem solvers at heart,” Comprés said. “We are always looking for new ways to better serve the trade community.”
