Independent Health is launching a new nutrition benefit program with Tops Friendly Markets that will offer money-back rewards to members for purchasing fresh fruit and vegetables.

The benefit, which begins Jan. 1, 2014, offers members $1 in credit for every $2 spent on fresh produce, with the points coming back to members quarterly in the form in the form of a co-branded Tops gift card redeemable for anything in the store except tobacco products.

Besides making fruits and vegetable affordable, the program is designed to keep members engaged and informed about the benefits of proper nutrition and reduced risk factors, said Dr. Michael Cropp, president and CEO at Independent Health.

“Getting people to change is not an easy thing to do,” he said. But, providing an appealing motivation that’s easy to use makes a big difference.
