Celebrity cook-it-yourself advocate, Donal Skehan – whose television cookery programmes have inspired a generation of young meal-makers – is going bananas again!
His challenge this year, which is backed by banana importer Fyffes, is to find Ireland’s best banana dessert creation that has a banana as a key ingredient.
The popular presenter hopes to repeat his success of last year, when his task was to judge Ireland’s most creative banana bread bakers – a quest that gave national recognition to the talents of overall winner, Cobh native Gillian Carney.
The event is part of celebrations to mark National Banana Day on 21st April, during which Fyffes is supporting the national drive to encourage healthy eating – especially amongst young and growing children – and to remind shoppers to ‘think bananas’ when choosing a natural and nutritious food or meal accompaniment.
Entries are open from 14th – 19th April, with winners announced on National Banana Day itself, 21st April. Rewards will go to the overall winner and multiple best category winners, including one for junior entrants.
Upbeat about the appeal the event will have for people of all ages, Fyffes marketing manager, Emma Hunt-Duffy says: “We witnessed some exceptional entries last year for the banana bread initiative, so are excited to see how families around Ireland take up this challenge. Aside from raising awareness of what a fun and versatile fruit the banana is, we want to capture as many creative ideas, ingredients and recipes as possible, then share them far and wide”.
