SAN ANGELO, Texas — A good chill period and warmer than normal January have brought blossoms to peach orchards about 10 days early at Fredericksburg this spring, says horticulturist Jim Kamas.
Fredericksburg, 140 miles southeast of San Angelo, is the Gillespie County seat.
For peach trees to produce a crop, they must accumulate between 750 and 850 hours at 45 degrees or below from winter's first freeze to the end of February.
"We are looking forward to the 2012 harvest season starting in mid-May," said Dianne Eckhardt, president of the Hill Country Fruit Council.
