Dole, the largest tenant at the Port of Wilmington, is seriously weighing a move to the Port of Paulsboro in New Jersey at the end of its contract in two-and-a-half years.
Delaware officials are working to keep the fruit importer in the state, worrying that a departure could begin a cascade of other tenant departures for the planned facility across the Delaware River.
A key point in negotiations is whether a warehousing union will agree to concessions, including work rule changes and a pay cut, as another union at the port already has done, said Alan Levin, the port’s chairman. Hundreds of jobs at the port could be at stake.
Officials in Wilmington and Paulsboro use the same word – “optimistic” – about the prospects Dole will sign a new deal with them.
