There’s nothing worse than a rotten, squishy banana, except maybe a handful of rotten bananas.
Dole Food Co. Inc. is trying to eliminate the frustration of brown bananas through a new packaging system designed to control the ripening process, and shoppers in Amarillo will be among the first in the country to try it.
Dole Fresh Fruit, a Dole subsidiary, is working with Market Street United and United Supermarkets in Amarillo and nine other Texas communities to test Dole FreshPack, a plastic bag designed to keep bananas fresh longer.
The trial run will be deemed successful if FreshPack increases banana consumption in Texas, said Bil Goldfield, communications manager with Dole Fresh Fruit. He said the company has been pleased with the response so far.
