WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CALIFORNIA – Dole Food Company (NYSE:DOLE) joined the Environmental Media Association (EMA), actress and advocate Emmanuelle Chriqui and Carson High School students and officials April 5th to mark the dedication of a garden at the school facilities. Dole farmer Greg France, handed out strawberry seed packets and shared tips on sustainable farming while Chriqui spoke to students about nutrition.
This dedication is part of Dole Food Company’s larger effort to support gardens and greening in urban schools across Los Angeles—a city with one of the highest childhood obesity rates in the nation. According to Centers for Disease Control, at least 14% of Los Angeles’ student population is considered obese.
“Our school nutrition and garden program is an important element of Dole’s overall initiative to encourage a healthy lifestyle in children that we hope will carry over into adulthood,” said Marty Ordman, Vice President, Marketing and Communications for Dole. “Our efforts align with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign and other programs that teach children about nutrition and sustainable living in an effort to combat the growing childhood obesity epidemic that is sweeping our nation, especially in underserved urban communities.”
