LONG BEACH – Driven by demand for locally grown foods and a desire to support small business, farmers markets are flourishing in Long Beach, mirroring national trends.

The city now supports four weekly markets from Naples to Bixby Knolls, with a lease recently signed for a new 68-booth waterfront market at Marine Stadium.

Estimates vary, but the markets draw more than 10,000 consumers and dozens of farmers and vendors to the city Wednesday through Sunday.

Markets also operate weekly in Cerritos, Huntington Beach, San Pedro and Downey, among other communities, making access widely available to residents and workers throughout the region.

Like most shoppers who frequent the markets, downtown resident Simon Funge says they fulfill several needs outside of simply purchasing fresh foods.
