Coral Gables, FL – Del Monte Fresh Produce supported the HEAT “Back to School” event on Monday, August 20, 2012. The HEAT, Del Monte and other corporate partners kicked off the 2012-13 school year by welcoming back the students and teachers of Orange Brook Elementary in Broward County. HEAT player Norris Cole, Del Monte Fresh Produce staff, Office Depot, and other supporters distributed 900 sackpacks filled with school supplies as they entered the school early in the morning. Del Monte distributed promotional material while Del Monte mascot bananas took pictures with students and parents.
“It is important that we keep fruit top of mind and help teach children at a young age about the importance of eating healthy,” said Dennis Christou, VP of N.A. Marketing at Del Monte Fresh Produce. “As the Official Fresh Fruit of the Miami HEAT, it only makes sense that we be involved with the community in these types of events, where we can reach the younger demographics, and get them eating healthy early!”
Orange Brook Elementary is one of South Florida’s highest scoring Title I schools in Broward County with a long history of success on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). Orange Brook Elementary has received an "A” school grade consecutively for the past nine years. The HEAT selected Orange Brook Elementary because of its great academic accomplishments and the strong support it receives from the community and dedicated staff.
