Cyclospora Causes 6.5M Households Pausing Salad Buying in July
August 19, 2026 | 2 min to read
The cyclospora outbreak shows how quickly a food safety event can translate into broader consumer and business disruption.
87% of produce shoppers are aware of the outbreak, with more than a quarter of households saying they have stopped buying salads and fresh greens entirely and one in ten cutting back their spending—putting an estimated $280 million in consumer produce spending at risk every month that the outbreak continues.
- Fresh salad purchases are seeing an immediate pullback. Over 6.5 million households in the U.S. stopped purchasing salad mixes and kits in the latest month ending July 26, 2026, compared with the prior month. Per-household spending in impacted states (where over 200+ reported cases were found) dropped by 10.7% in the same time period.
- Consumers aren’t fully replacing the fresh produce they’re avoiding. Despite 45% of shoppers saying they have or plan to substitute fresh produce, household penetration increased just 0.3 points for canned vegetables and 0.1 points for frozen, with only canned seeing higher per-household spending (+3.2%).
- Quick-service restaurant chains are also feeling the impact. Compared with the prior period, total trips made for salads at QSR declined by over 16% in the latest month with per-household spending declining by 2.1%, extending the impact of produce concerns beyond the grocery aisle.
- Consumers are poised to buy salad again. Among consumers who said they stopped purchasing salad mixes and kits due to the Cyclospora outbreak, 82% plan to buy these items again once the outbreak is contained, suggesting much of the current pullback could be temporary.
Methodology: Purchase data is based on Numerator’s Total Commerce Panel, which tracks longitudinal purchase behavior from 200,000 U.S. households across more than 44,000 retailers. A Numerator Verified Voices survey captured responses from more than 3,000 purchase-verified fresh produce buyers on July 31, 2026.
