BARTOW | The second vote went a lot better for Doug Ackerman.
The Florida Citrus Commission on Wednesday re-affirmed hiring Ackerman as executive director of the Florida Department of Citrus by a 9-0 vote. The same commissioners split 5-4 on Dec. 21 to hire Ackerman.
The second vote was necessary because the Florida Senate failed to confirm Ackerman and more than 400 appointments before adjourning earlier this month, said Ed Scales, the commission's lawyer. Under state law, appointees would lose their jobs in 45 days, or April 23, if not reappointed.
Ackerman was the first, and possibly last, top executive at the Citrus Department to face a confirmation vote.
