If you think meat prices are high on your next trip to the supermarket, consider that it could be worse.
A simple comparison of the U.S. government’s latest retail and wholesale meat price summaries shows that on average, retailers are passing on only a portion of wholesale meat prices caused by jumps in prices for live and feeder cattle and for hogs.
For instance, U.S. Department of Agriculture figures show that through mid-March 90 percent lean trimmings rose by 24 percent but Consumer Price Index figures released Thursday show hamburger prices up 7 per cent from a year ago.
