The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Monday that red meat supplies in commercial freezers on Sept. 30 were up 3 percent from the previous month and up 15 percent from last year.
Total pounds of beef in freezers were down 2 percent from the previous month and down slightly from last year. Frozen pork supplies were up 8 percent from the previous month and up 28 percent from last year.
Stocks of pork bellies, from where bacon comes, were up 17 percent from last month and up 79 percent from last year.
The USDA also reported Monday that through Saturday, the weekly cattle slaughter was down 3.2 per cent and the total beef cutout wholesale price was up 5.9 percent from a year earlier.
