NEW BREMEN — Red Barn Meats of Croghan is among a handful of the region’s slaughterhouses certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that could be affected by a $20.6 million proposal for a meat processing facility planned in the town of Watertown.

Proposed at the Jefferson County Corporate Park off outer Coffeen Street by a local developer and a group of farmers, New York Meat Co. would have the capacity to harvest about 100 cattle a day — along with 200 to 300 smaller animals including calves, sheep, pigs and goats.

Project stakeholders have said the proposed 42,000-square-foot facility, certified by the USDA, would serve dairy and livestock farmers within a 100-mile radius of Watertown, including Central New York and Ontario. About 80 percent of the plant’s business is expected to come from cull cattle of dairy farms — those that aren’t producing enough milk or are getting too old.
