Ulupono Initiative, a social investment fund co-founded by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, has teamed with Hawaii’s Parker Ranch to study the development of a large-scale grass-fed beef operation on the Big Island.
Under the agreement, Honolulu-based Ulupono Initiative and Kamuela-based Parker Ranch, one of the oldest and largest ranches in the United States and the largest producer of grass-fed beef in Hawaii, will jointly fund research trials that will follow 200 head of cattle on a 300-acre test area. Testing will begin in September and continue through May 2013. If the trial is successful, Parker Ranch believes its local grass-fed beef program could reach up to 4,000 head of cattle per year
“We are very focused on developing our local grass-fed beef program,” Parker Ranch CEO Dutch Kuyper said in a statement. “This is important on many fronts, especially to develop a strategic hedge within our business against the risk of rising energy prices in the future.”
