No More Bargain Beef: Higher Prices Move Down Meat Chain

The only way out is up, so no more bargain beef.

"All we could do was try to absorb the price increases, and we tried as long as we could, but it went on so long. We held off for a month, month and a half," said Scott Nettles, meat and seafood director for United Supermarkets.

After suffering losses for several years, cattle feeders are beginning to make money, calf producers are looking at strong demand, and packers are turning a profit. That means higher prices have moved through the beef supply chain and are arriving on retail shelves.

Meat man Melvin Edes has had to increase prices for halves of beef packaged as various cuts by about 20 percent, but he is philosophical about it.
