HERTFORD, N.C. – Seven years ago, Carol Naughton pulled from her leg a tick with a white dot on its back.

She was concerned about Lyme disease, but after some research discovered that the Lone Star tick – named for that dot on its back – did not carry that malady.

Great. Nothing to worry about.

That’s what she thought.

A few weeks later, she ate a big meal of lamb and woke up that night with hives all over her body.
