The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) will begin a pilot project to assess the compliance and effectiveness of generically-approved labels at select establishments. The initial phase of the assessment will take place August 22 – September 30, 2016, at five federal meat and poultry establishments within the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. FSIS will send two labeling policy subject matter experts (SMEs) and one policy analysis SME to each selected establishment to review the label records. The labeling policy SMEs will evaluate all of the generically approved label records and records of label changes, while the policy analysis SME will use information gathered during the assessment to finalize a protocol for establishment and label record sampling, label record assessment and response to deficiencies found in label records. FSIS will then use this protocol for periodic assessments of generically-approved label records. Companies contacted by FSIS as part of this project should contact the Meat Institute's Regulatory and Scientific Affairs department staff with questions they have.
