Bison Farmers Report Best Year On Record As Consumer Demand Grows

CLARE — Buffalo meat: It’s what’s for dinner in a growing number of homes across the Great Lakes Bay Region.

A more health-conscious and informed public has been flocking to the other red meat, which is nearly 75 percent leaner than beef, according to the National Bison Association.

“Between the media and the push to eat healthier, eat local, we’ve noticed our monthly sales going up,” said Krista Pohl, co-owner of Pohl’s Bison in Clare. “We notice a few more new faces, and it’s all word of mouth. Somebody heard something from somebody else.”

Pohl and her husband, Jim, sell their grass-fed bison meat at their retail shop on the farm, 7308 Whiteville Road, and at Greentree Natural Grocery, 214 N. Franklin St. in Mount Pleasant.
