Beef Industry Backers Wait & See On Proposed Dietary Guideline Changes

Supporters of Nebraska’s beef industry have made their case in comments and letters. Now they’ll wait to see if they were heard.
The industry is protesting possible revisions to federal nutrition guidelines, saying they could weaken demand for one of Nebraska’s biggest agricultural products at a time when U.S. beef consumption already is falling amid high prices and health concerns.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans are updated every five years, and the eighth edition will be published this fall. The guidelines affect what shoppers purchase, what health professionals recommend and what the government buys for school, military and senior citizen meal programs. They’re also the basis for nutrition marketing efforts such as MyPlate.
