Beef Has “Great Story To Tell” On Nutrition Labels

NCBA has submitted formal comments on a proposed USDA rule to require
nutrition labeling on meat products. The rule would require labels on major cuts
of single ingredient, raw meat and poultry products.

Cattlemen long have supported the inclusion of beefs complete nutrient profile
on packaging. A 3-ounce serving of lean beef is considered an excellent source
of protein, zinc, vitamin B, selenium and phosphorus. There are 29 cuts of beef
that meet government guidelines for lean.

“The beef industry has a great story to tell, especially when it comes to the
nutritional value of our product,” said NCBA President Steve Foglesong.

NCBAs comments supported the inclusion of lean and fat percentage on ground
meat labels. Research funded by the beef checkoff indicates both are important
in the consumers decision-making process. NCBA also supports displaying
nutrition information on packaging, rather than at the meatcase.
